The Popes would play a role in the “storm of witchcraft” that broke out in Salem and neighboring towns in 1692. It is a small wooden chest, probably made in the 1670s for two Salem Quakers, Joseph and Bathsheba Pope. I loved the many nods to how McGee has rewritten history, which start in the Prologue of the story. I'm a fan of rewriting history and couldn't wait to see where the story took me. I enjoyed the books (see my review here) and was really excited to find out that she had begun a new series, this time around the fictional American royal family. ![]() The Thousandth Floor series by Katharine McGee was popular for a reason: the stories were entertaining, moved quickly, and we got to know a slew of different characters. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ecocritical approach to children’s literature: Example of “i am a hornbeam branch”. The underlying theories to support the discussion are those of ecocriticism, narrative and illustrative elements, and the trees as metaphor of Mother Earth, all of which are interconnected in children’s picture books.Ībram, D. Throughout the book, we are morally opposed to him fighting his dog, China, yet we are touched by the way he fiercely protects her and his family. Skeetah’s character is just one example of this. ![]() Moreover, the themes in this work are incredibly nuanced and complex. However, this book also shows the timeless themes of family loyalty and resilience. Teenagers will have to navigate their world, and yes, that world does involve uncomfortable topics like statutory rape and teenage pregancy. This novel contains themes that will always be relevant. From China the dog to Hurricane Katrina, this book is dripping with motifs that further the theme. Harold Bloom, a critic whose love of Shakespeare tended to blunt his faculties, and no friend of the politically correct, wrote that you “ would have to be blind, deaf and dumb not to recognise that Shakespeare’s grand, equivocal comedy ‘The Merchant of Venice’ is nevertheless a profoundly anti-Semitic work.” And it is not ‘political correctness’ to reflect on the unpleasant anti-Semitism that’s seamed through it. ‘The Merchant of Venice’ certainly has its moments, but like many Shakespeare plays it is patchy, and at least half an hour too long when performed in its entirety. In this instance, I’m not sure McGovern is right. ![]() |
